Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities determined he posed a definite escape threat while under domestic detention.

The one-time leader was found guilty of plotting a military coup in the ninth month and handed more than over two decades in jail, but he was staying under house arrest pending appeals.

High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the move to detain the 70-year-old politician was a precautionary step after fresh information came to light.

This included attempting to break his electronic bracelet and a call for a public vigil that could "allow for a potential flight.

Legal Document Reveals Flight Fears

In a filing authorising the detention, Justice Moraes said data from the centre monitoring his home detention suggested the former leader's aim to disable the electronic ankle bracelet to ensure success in his escape.

This, it said, would be assisted by the confusion caused by the gathering called by his offspring.

His child, his son Flávio, who serves as a congressional representative, called for a assembly of his backers near Bolsonaro's home to take place on the weekend.

Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on social media on last Friday: Will you battle for your nation, or see it all from your phone there on your couch? I invite you to struggle with us."

Context of Sentencing

The former president was determined responsible of heading a scheme aimed at keeping him in power after he failed to win the 2022 election to his ideological adversary, President Lula.
